Project/Thesis Proposal Overview - Master of Divinity

Important Information & Instructions

Master of Divinity students are required to select one of the following options:

  • Six credits for a final project
  • Six credits from elective courses
  • Six credits for a thesis - approved on a case-by-case basis by the academic dean

A final project may invoke a range of possibilities, different from the research essay indicated by the thesis option. (Some examples are art exhibit, performance, play-writing, musical composition.) The idea for, and the shape of, a student’s senior project must be approved by the faculty member directing the work. The requirements of the project, and of the faculty member’s expectations of the project, will be established for the individual student’s case at that time, but all senior projects must include a written academic paper of approximately 12-20 pages.

If Project option is selected:

  1. The student obtains the approval of the faculty member(s) who agree to serve as primary and secondary supervisor. Note: This corresponds to first reader and second reader in the case of a thesis.
  2. The subject of the the project is determined with the faculty supervisors and a Proposal is written.
  3. Once the faculty supervisors agree, a subject is determined, and Proposal is approved, student completes this form and submits to Registrar.
  4. Register for UT 421.
  5. This Overview form is due by October 14.
  6. A proposal is due to the supervisors by December 2.
  7. The completed project is due on April 14 with a copy also deposited into their ePortfolio.

If Thesis option is selected:

  1. The student obtains the approval of the faculty members who agree to serve as thesis advisor/first reader and second reader. Note: A thesis advisor is not necessarily the same professor who serves as the student’s program advisor, but the first reader must be a member of the faculty.
  2. The topic of the the thesis is determined with the faculty readers and a Proposal is written.
  3. Once the faculty readers agree, a topic is determined, and Proposal is approved, student completes this form and submits to Registrar.
  4. Register for UT 420 if also registered for/attending UT 150 and UT 151.
  5. This Overview form is due by October 14.
  6. A proposal is due to the readers by December 2.
  7. The thesis is due on April 14 with a copy also deposited into their ePortfolio.
