Overview
Guided Readings (401 course numbers) are significant in extending the range of the master-level curriculum, and more closely harmonizing student special interests and faculty expertise in cases where a full-scale class cannot be offered, or offered with any regularity. However, what is regarded as an equitable learning experience for 1, 2, or 3 credit guided readings, must be standardized. ‘Contact times’ in guided reading courses are made up of more than professor-student contacts, and much of the course centers on the student’s engagement with a reading list.
Students should not normally accumulate from guided readings:
- More than 9 elective credits in the M.Div. program
- More than 6 elective credits in the M.A. program
- More than 3 elective credits in the S.T.M. program
A guided reading is not intended as an alternative means for pursuing studies normally available in regular academic courses. For this reason, such courses are not normally offered when scheduled offerings on the same, or similar topic, are available in the current academic year. Students are responsible for determining potential reading assignments and presenting a reading list to the sponsoring professor. Then, a topic/title is established in collaboration with the sponsoring professor. If approved, the student and faculty follow the below instructions for submission to the registrar. It is important to review the guided reading policy in the Union Student Handbook.
